Description:

Mission details:

After testing faulty batteries for Ku-band transponders were discovered. This could lead to the transponders not being marketed. Each transponder is worth $799,000 in revenue a year. The satellite entered service on 23 March 1996.

6 of the 34 transponders are owned by PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara, the remaining by PT Satelindo

The satellite experienced a failure on 1 Dec 1998 of electrical nature which caused the satellite to loose ability to recharge batteries. This mean eclipse backup loss.

After this event, insurance claims were placed and paid. HGS then bought the satellite from the insurers and and developed the procedures necessary to maintain full geostationary service operations except during eclipse itself and brief periods on either side of each eclipse event. Kalitel, a San Diego-based telecommunications solutions provider leased the satellite and will place it in service at 50°E with the assistance of Turk Telekom.
